So this is great and everything, but I've got to think that instances with thousands of users isn't really the way forward, rather, <1000 but many more instances. Remove points of failure, remove censorship, remove the need for one individual to bare massive hosting costs...
If someone comes up with an almost hands-off, one-click service for setting up instances of a limited size for a fixed cost per month, it would absolutely make a killing...

@orielle @turi like, what would it take to — and I can see the literal issues with this forming in my head — reduce an instance to literally a USB stick or a plug computer? that you can plug in, run a configuration from the browser, and that's it? it might only have half a dozen user IDs, or maybe just one person. a single dumb appliance, maybe built out of... idk, a RasPi? or one of those cheap HDMI stick computers? can it be done? *should* it?
@orielle @turi not quite hands-off though, just personal attention by creator of protocol. Which is not bad, but we are talking one person here. Would it be possible to dumb down the admin work to such a point where it *could* be a literal appliance?
