Ok, problem with Mastadon: In Firefox it incures a SIGNIFICANT amount of CPU. Firefox suddenly starts using an average of 10-20% of my CPU, a i5 M 540 at 2.5 GHz.

Only web applications could make copying data off the internet and displaying it on screen take that much CPU.

Testing in Chrome now. Seems fine so far. Still about 5% of CPU, which is pretty crazy for rending text and a few images.

WTF, do I blame Firefox or the person who wrote Mastadon?

@Canageek I have the same Problem on Chrome and Lubuntu 17 64bit on an AMD Turion II mobile CPU.
One time the cpu usage jumped to 60%, most of the times it jumps to ~20%. (Playing a youtube video uses 15-20 %)
The Jumps occur seemingly randomly but frequently.

@turi Wonder if it is the same problem or unrelated? At least playing a video is a task that could legit use a CPU. This is put text on screen.

@Canageek I meant the youtube video as comparison. There is no way that the Mastodon site should use as much cpu as a tab playing a youtube video.

@turi OH, I see it. So it isn't just Firefox. Weird.
