that thing where you live in a city, but when family comes to visit you're freaking out trying to find stuff to do with them and you're googling "things to do in <my city>" even though you've lived there for a few years, you should know what things to do

@tcql if your city's any fun at all, you can do wonders for your appreciation of it by booking a b&b and pretending to be a tourist for a weekend.

@tcql You're in New York, right? If so, I am the queen of finding parent friendly activities here.

@SuzanEraslan nah, DC so there's museums and stuff but you can't do that aaaaaall day

@tcql Apparently, we have different mothers. My mom and I once spent 10 hours and 2 meals at the Met and weren't ready to go when they kicked us out.

@tcql I think this is the sort of thing that only looks strange on the surface because of the hidden context difference. You _do_ know what things to do in the context of everyday life, because you naturally focused on that because that's what you're going to need for living there. You don't necessarily know what to do if people are coming with expectations of novelty that your usual life doesn't share. Makes perfect sense (you probably knew that, but seemed worth saying).

@tcql Another way of putting it is that if you knew your visitors expected and were okay with "just living" while they were with you, there wouldn't be any pressure to suddenly find All The Things. That's how it usually seems to go with us, honestly.
