So...apparently...there’s bed bugs possibly roaming around my workplace....

@KyokiKafuka My day job gets checked for the little bastards once a month.

@starbreaker When you work for the public sector, that routine comes before a meeting and another meeting about the problem. **sighs**

@KyokiKafuka I work for a large firm that takes on a lot of public sector contracts (all opinions are my own).

Basically, I'd be out of a job if the US implemented and - unless I was willing to do work for law enforcement or the military. It would be worth it, though.

@starbreaker @KyokiKafuka Ugh... I think it sucks how even the public sector is so reliant on the private sector in America. :/ This NEEDS to change!!

@ayachan @KyokiKafuka I agree, but apparently governments need disposable workers. It would make too much sense to hire developers, train them on all the tech the state uses, and put them on various projects needed while having them do training or open-source work when gov't code doesn't need to be worked on.

@starbreaker @KyokiKafuka The American government has serious priority and efficiency issues, then. -_-

@ayachan @KyokiKafuka And imagination problems. Can you imagine what the internet might be like if somebody in government had realized the potential of Unix, taken the source and rights from AT&T under eminent domain, and released Unix into the public domain while putting Kernighan, Ritchie, etc. on the public payroll to lead development and continue to improve Unix with a mandate toward making computing accessible to the average citizen?

The Unix wars might never have happened, for one thing.

@starbreaker @KyokiKafuka The American government is more focused on neoliberalism than they are ingenuity, imagination and common sense. That’s the reason behind this, I feel.

You’re right, of course... Anything admin and:or technical runs better on systems such as Unix. *sighs*

Matthew Graybosch @starbreaker

@ayachan @KyokiKafuka BTW, can you imagine what the US might be like if the Works Progress/Projects Administration, Federal Project Number One, and Civilian Conservation Corps were not only never shut down, but expanded to offer useful work to any man or woman willing to do public service for a reasonable wage?

There's so much work that needs to be done in this country that goes undone because capitalists can't turn a profit by doing so.
