Re "The mind can't separate emotional cortex from logical": This is currently one of the greatest causes of discomfort & fear; our amygdala hasn't adapted to the modern world with its few grave threats and often overreacts severely.
One can train to filter the emotional response, for instance through mindful meditation; if you're interested, I can recommend "Your Survival Instinct Is Killing You" by Dr Marc Schoen (I should have an .epub somewhere...).
