This is easily the wildest Stack Exchange story I've read in a long time:
An XPS craps out majorly, but user needs to transfer important files to thinkPad. At one point reads color flashes on the broken display with a webcam (30 bits per second), now trying audio transmission?!?! https://superuser.com/questions/1268868/can-i-save-these-documents-on-a-dying-machine-from-oblivion/1273280 https://octodon.social/media/661hrr96Kz_RIRVdOLQ https://octodon.social/media/QhCIjA9cVNz2DTWNng8
@schlink MAXIMUM NERD HAS BEEN ACHIEVED
@schlink Rust saving the day again! 😂
@schlink hilarious and awesome, a remarkable use of crowdsourcing and hackery
@schlink not often that i can come up with a sufficiently ridiculous tech story to successfully horrify my father
@schlink They are lucky. They only have to type the audiomodem source
@schlink Why doesn't he just output a bunch of QR codes, if he's trying to do something like that.
@schlink
That is a lot of effort to avoid doing backups.
Apparently the #rust compiler still works, if you're in to Rust and audio transmission and something called libasound, maybe you can help. Looks like last edit was 8 hours ago.
