Free, Unsolicited Mastodon advice: what worked for me when I started here was to go read my instance's local and federated timelines and follow anyone who seemed interesting and/or talked about stuff I was into. Then, once my timeline was sufficiently busy, I just unfollowed anyone whose stuff wasn't working for me.
(I also followed anyone from Metafilter, but that's more of a me thing and may or may not work for you.)
