I know companies model support as a loss to be minimized, but it's especially frustrating in billing. @DigitalOcean has made it easier for me to move to a new host (and learn NisOS along the way) than contact support about a billing bug.

@pushcx I assume you mean NixOS, in which case, great! Horray for functional distros!

@cwebber ...yep, typo. Been keeping half an eye on it for a few years, this is a good excuse to jump in.

@pushcx I've been using GuixSD for the last several years. It's been a big win for my life IMO. A few rough edges, but nothing compares to atomic (and roll-backable) upgrades, and having "guix environment" being a universal virtualenv-like development environment tool

@cwebber I've had a lot of frustrations and bugs with provisioning/deployment tools that don't model and manage state (chef, puppet, now ansible), so fingers crossed.

@pushcx Yes... likewise. I've been meaning to get around to working on Guix Deploy but haven't yet, admittedly. Too many projects!

@pushcx where did you end up? In the UK I have nothing but good things to say about Bytemark (@mbloch) tho' they're not quite as cheap as the absolute bargain basement providers

@telent I will probably move to prgmr.com; they donate hosting to Lobste.rs and I'm just trying to host a teensy personal shell box.

Nix you have 1.25 GiB of RAM, get it together.

@pushcx OK, bootstrapped a NixOS install and starting to learn to configure it. So far still easier than contacting DigitalOcean about their billing bugs.

@pushcx Five attempts to contact them got 1 error and 4 bot autoreplies. Partitioning and installing grub only took 4 tries.

I might be a bit late on this, but I wrote a guide for Linode on this when I still worked for them:

@nixy That would've saved me a couple minutes of hassle, thank you for the thought. I'm writing up my notes in a blog post to share, too.
