TOTD: America isn't a pile of dirt. America is the people who live here. You cannot love America without caring for Americans.

@Yve Can you love America if you care for.. say.. 52% of Americans?

@oneoffsuit All organizations, whether private or public, whether governmental or nongovernmental, are responsible for their entire affected population. If an organization is serving only 52%, then it is not living up to its responsibility.

@Yve I agree the organization has responsibilities as such. Thought we were referring to individuals within the organization, who are not in power and thus not necessarily burdened int the same way.

@oneoffsuit Often organizations' motives are diluted by compromise--the whole cannot act without some agreement to do so by a majority. Individuals are not so burdened, so they find themselves with a greater clarity of mission. Consequently, if an individual associates with "America" by claiming love for it, there is no excuse to not care for all Americans. If they wish to claim love for "white people" or "Democrats" or "Wil Wheaton" then they care for a subset. They cannot claim the whole.

@Yve The subsets you mentioned seem to be fairly broad and non-controversial. How about murders and pedophiles? They are also subsets of American and so necessarily included in your definition of love for Americans.
