I wonder how much would change if people were required to be paid market rate for their time if the interview process went past a certain point. How many broken things in tech are caused by the fact that costs of hiring and of bad hires are so heavily externalized and put on candidates. If companies were forced to realize a larger portion of the cost for their process would we see things change for the better?

@craigmaloney A lot probably, but eventually Google or Facebook or someone would start to realize how much it's costing them, and then other companies would cargo-cult their solution just like they've cargo-culted their current hiring process.
@cercerilla Honestly there's no good solutions right now for hiring developers. I know I spent the bulk of 2017 looking and have had conversations with friends who are in the process of hiring. Between the "puzzle interviews", the "coding challenges", and the "schedule half-a-day and install this software so we can see what's on your computer while we do this challenge" I think the whole industry is doomed.

@craigmaloney @cercerilla I stand by my man child point. In any other area people accept that not all hires will be flawless perfection capable of running the entire company from their home office
@odinsdream @cercerilla Oh absolutely. I ran into more positions where Goddess Athena emerging fully ready for battle would have had a hell of a time getting past the requirements.

@odinsdream @cercerilla It's also because companies are deathly afraid of getting sued for bad hires. So much so that they front-load the process ad absurdum.
