Just curious: how many of y'all work somewhere that actively discourages knowing what your coworkers earn? I had to make some aggressively pointed estimations to get a coworker to give it up.

@Mainebot Private university here; pay range for job classifications are accessible to all staff so I could make a decent guess at what my coworkers make, from knowing what they do and how long they've been here. But to know anyone's exact salary I'd have to ask them. No one actively discourages that but I can only think of a couple of coworkers I'd be truly comfortable asking. It's just sort of culturally Not Done.

@nopetopus I work in a small company with a gigantic disparity between 'tech' employees, the owners, and everyone else.
