Bruce makes many good points, but some of his numbers are pretty far off. Main example, DSTAR's *total* bitrate is 4800. Breakdown:
2400 Voice
1200 Voice FEC
1150 Data (mostly unused)
50 Protocol overhead
So yes, there's nearly a quarter of the stream being wasted most of the time.
