So what are my Android alternatives again? Don't really like Apple much either.
@nivex LineageOS is an Android fork, a continuation of CyanogenMod. Lets you not have Google Play Services, but still means that whatever idea google comes up to make Android more shitty and more resource-heavy will affect you.
PostmarketOS is an attempt to make a new lightweight Linux-based system for phones. It's very WIP, supports like 20 phone models, out of which calling and SMS only work on Nokia N900. So long ways to go.
@lanodan @Wolf480pl @nivex And Purism Phone, which is completely independent, will be out shortly: https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/
@lanodan @mareklach @nivex but SailfishOS frontend is proprietary.
@nivex What about the Ubuntu Phone fork UBports?
@nivex Nokia 3310 or similar feature phones?
@nivex sailfish?
@nivex #Purism? They have some campaign ongoing.(@Purism
)
Except of that the only practical option currently sems to be #LineageOS/some other custom ROM.
@nivex That’s a very good question. I still use an iPhone, but it’s more and more buggy.
I heard that purism will make a true Linux / Debian phone soon....
@nivex carry a feature phone. sometimes I challenge myself to not use Maps in a new city. I found that in some places, the public transportation/bus stop maps are very useful. Berlin is particularly good about this. many other places, not so much.
none of "this" is really going to change until we have open sourced baseband modules. and we're decades away from that being a commercial reality.
@nivex Well, what do you want in a, I assume "smart", phone? Do you care about apps or is just a web browser enough? What about music? How much time/effort are you willing to put in to sideload a new ROM? How far are you running away from the big company walled gardens?
