Mastodon is clearly not an American thing.

@kingu_platypus_gidora
"But how do we monetize on it?"
"You don't."
"Eyeballs?" Pay per click?"
"Nope."
"How do we get premium placement for our brand?"
"You don't. "
"How do we contact their ad department?"
"Isn't one."
"So what will this do for our revenue stream?"
"Nothing."
"I... I... I don't understand."

@frankiesaxx @kingu_platypus_gidora That pretty much sums up the way most Americans feel about it. You at least have one from the Minnesota/Wisconsin on here. I feel like a rebel.

@kingu_platypus_gidora
Danish person here.
Didn't know i'm 1/(<1000). Interesting nonetheless.

@kingu_platypus_gidora Regina? And Halifax? THOSE are the two main Canadian centres? That doesn't seem right.

@vjgoh I found this image on someone toot. I am searching for the source (that I can actually zoom, and maybe they explain their methodology).

@vjgoh @kingu_platypus_gidora I would think the Regina one is just an average for the centre of Canada. So maybe it is Halifax? Maybe it 2 people on Saint Pierre and Miquelon?

@compthink @vjgoh

If I am bored this week-end, I might make a script to geo-localise all the instances at instances.mastodon.xyz/list

This is probably what the author of this map have done.

@kingu_platypus_gidora hold on now, wait just a minute... what are these words other than "America"?

😂

@kingu_platypus_gidora it appears from this map to be mostly an ocean thing.

Also, those 20,000 toots from Tulsa (central US) are probably all @Elizafox.

@kingu_platypus_gidora This is why the American tech press is shitting all over it.

@kingu_platypus_gidora Curious. Here in my country we are heavy users of social media in general, but we don't exist here.

@srtaveneno
Hello.

I found this image and though it was interesting, but it doesn't appear to be very accurate :)

Where do you live?

@kingu_platypus_gidora I'm from Brazil. But really, I don't find lots of brazilians here. I have few friends who joined Mastodon with me and two other brazilians who I follow (and they follow me), but I really don't find any fellow countryman

@srtaveneno Same thing here in Canada. People are too addicted to Facebook and Twitter!

I have very good online friends from Brazil and also a co-worker from there.

They all tell me the country is melting under the heat

Please take care of yourself!

@kingu_platypus_gidora Facebook, Twitter, Instagram... There was a time when Snapchat was huge.

In my state we are dealing with crazy weather (sometimes rains, sometimes we have a sunny day); but there are places that are insanely hot. And it's autumn hahah

@srtaveneno I am glad your place is not too hot.

Here in Canada we have reversed problem: the coldest winters ever...

I want to be your neighbour!!

@kingu_platypus_gidora here it's a lovely place. In the summer, it's TOO HOT that make a dragon retire (like the song haha) but during autumn/winter we still go to the beach. (but it's here in my city and parts of the coast. If you go to the country - sort of - you find different weathers. But not snow, nothing like that. In fact, I saw snow only once, traveling overseas

@srtaveneno

I so wish I had saw snow only once in my life... :)

@kingu_platypus_gidora HAHAHHAHAHAH as we brazilians say... PLEASE COME TO BRAZIL

you need to spens at least the summer here (December to March). Sun, beaches, carnival (if you like)... but I suggest you to visit here autumn/winter because it's warm.

@srtaveneno
I wish to go one day!!

My friend always invite me to visit him in Porto Alegre so I could have a free place to stay!

Nice to meet you Marina! :)

@Elizafox

If you see your instance, you are seeing yourself :)

@kingu_platypus_gidora where's that map from and what do the numbers reference to? Instances?

@ao37 I took the image from someone toot, the numbers are instances.

I am searching for the source but I have no luck so far. So it come with no waranty :)

@Adth Thanks! 😊

(Small correction, the numbers are users, so for exemple we have around 170k users signed up on french instances)

@kingu_platypus_gidora less than a thousand people in #Quebec are on Mastodon? Surprising.

@fitsbach
Yes, and the local media are totally silent about it.

It is ok, I don't want here to be filled with quebecers :)

@kingu_platypus_gidora same here. Not a big fan of my fellow citizens. Just surprised because people love to jump on the hype train here.

@kingu_platypus_gidora This gives me a lot of hope it'll stick around instead of dying off like Ello or Tsu. Mastodon isn't just a trend of one particular crowd upset about one incident on Twitter. This is a worldwide motion.

@kingu_platypus_gidora I'm ok with that for now. As long as there are enough folks to talk to

@kingu_platypus_gidora Well, not just an American thing. But, I wish more American tech companies were less capitalistic and saw the benefit in decentralized software.

@drkmttr

Yeah. Would be nice, but I am not expecting very much soon... :(

@kingu_platypus_gidora that green dot seems conspicuously close to the opnVPN server location. Is .social tunneled through openVPN?

@jattel This is totally possible.

But I don't know :(

@kingu_platypus_gidora @jattel be aware not only are users often in a different country to their instance, the dots are roughly in physical centre of the country where instance servers are located.

At present they do not have any more geographical accuracy than this.

I am a UK user on an instance in DE and am thus added to the dot for DE. One of the main UK instances is hosted in NL.

The rest of them are *not* all in Scotland!

@kingu_platypus_gidora …nor China, nor Russia. It wasn’t a Japan thing either til … suddenly it was.
