I took five years of Spanish, and I still don't know if I should use "usted" and sound excessively formal or use "tú" and insult everyone plus 5 generations of their ancestors.
@jordyd It also varies by country. Parts of Colombia only uses usted, and "tú" sounds feminising to them, AIUI.

@jordyd Are they 30+ years older or do they hold some sort of position of authority? If not, I’d say tú, but you can always start with usted and see how they respond! Things are rather relaxed here at the border, so ymmv in other regions.
@jordyd Totally varies by country. Fortunately, my mexican/californian/gringo accent is strong enough that my tu/usted and complete lack of vosotros is understood...
@jordyd You should talk more regularly with native spanish speakers. It should help you to figure out the appropriateness of each.
