My laptop's Liteon SSD seems to corrupt early written blocks
when the disk gets near to full. (Or randomly, not sure.)

Preparing to upgrade away from this POS.

(Via full OS reinstall since my OS doesn't track every OS file with hashes, which is kind of ridiculous.)

@joeyh I'm still scared to switch to an SSD given how often friends complain about corruption. I can't tell if I'm being absurd or not.

I wonder if there's a study out there about the relative corruption rate of spinning platters vs SSDs?

@cwebber I've NEVER had ssd corruption until my last one started failing after 2 years and the new laptop came with a bad one. Before that, 8 years or so, no failures.

TRIM support still seems a nightmare though.

@cwebber @joeyh From what I've read / experienced spinning disks tend to fail gradually, with some parts becoming inaccessible. SSDs seem to be more binary.

Apples backup strategy of sending data from a laptop SSD to an external hard disk seems to be a decent model.

@cwebber they must have like Gen 1 or Gen 2 SSDs.

iPhones and Macs never have this problems. All my SSD-only servers at work are fine. So is our flash SAN. I think it's a myth.

@joeyh @cwebber careful, I am still likely to wax rhapsodic about the virtue of backups.

@liw @joeyh I think it's true that a serious problem in my setup is that I don't have a good way to detect corruption. Probably I can blame that on dumb rsync backups and also using ext4 instead of btrfs. I should probably fix both, and soon.

@cwebber @liw @joeyh i use zfs on my backup server, so at least i can detect corruption in the backups.
