I need to come up with a better answer to the question, “How are you?” There needs to be a way for me to communicate the following without sounding like a jerk:
- I don’t have an answer to that question right now.
- I don’t owe you an answer.
- It’s totally cool for me to decline answering due to the factors above.
“Okay,” just isn’t satisfying for me.

Or something of that kind.
Actually, my usual answer to the unnecessary inquiry into my well-being is, “Upright."
