Man, Konrad Zuse was a cool cool guy. Basically invented computers from first principles, as far as I can tell, built some very advanced programmable computers in the 40's, and designed what might have been the first high-level programming language (Plankalkül).
There's a really great exhibit about him in the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin; very worth it, if you get a chance to go.
