So after reading this (http://lithub.com/men-explain-lolita-to-me/ -- CW for sexual assault on that) I decided to finally read Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Honestly I was able to dissociate a bit as I read Lolita, but this one is hitting a little closer to home.
Solnit does not mince words! Finally permission to hate the 'master piece.' I remember liking Tess 30 years ago but I am sure I would think differently now.
@generica I remember that after reading Lolita my main thoughts were (1) what a horrible story, and (2) why do people seem to think this is such a great book? Underwhelming, though I didn't have any personal experiences remotely close to it. Tess is a different story, and I'm having to pace myself. Maybe it's because the book is from her perspective?
