40% of Detroit lacks internet access so these folks are making it happen with a mesh network https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/kz3xyz/detroit-mesh-network
@cwebber It's great to see people interested in connecting Third World countries to the Internet. Did you contact their local ISOC chapter? :]
@cwebber the Internet is so horrible in the US that it would be funny, if it wasn't so sad.
Every time I read about the shenanigans that their ISP's are up to, I just shake my head. Getting states to ban cities from installing proper connectivity? What in the?
@cwebber Suburban Detroit resident checking in. Comcast has had a strangle hold on the region forever. If you go into Detroit city you will see sattilate dishes on almost every house because Comcast refuses to upgrade the infrastructure. Wide Open West is no better. They almost didn't install in my city because were not "a financially sound investment"
@cwebber Dan Gilbert (Founder of Quicken Loans, ) has been pouring money into the city for years, mostly in the downtown core area to attract gentrification and hipsters . His latest baby is Rocket Fiber. This is a FIOS service in the downtown and midtown area (Where all the rich white people are)
https://rocketfiber.com/service-map/. It would be nice if this mesh network could tie into this service so the people who really need the Internet to better there lives could have a solid backbone connection.
@cwebber I love the concept of mesh networks. I have done ever since I read about the one in Greece
