@casper I think the original intention was to have "topic-oriented" instances. That way communities were in some way separated but still discoverable (with federation). It's certainly different than other social media because of the [in]direct disparity of the population of users.
As a developer, I think the decentralization aspect is a very interesting experiment both in terms of app architecture design and from a social aspect.
@casper Aren't they all networked, if you follow someone from another network you automatically connect up. I am from Mastodon.Cloud :)
