here are some perks from a rented server because apparently people easily forget the state of things in the wild and why we gave that up in the first place:
- reliable power
- reliable fast internet connection that won't keep from tooting while someone dl an image
- comes with people to watch and fix your hardware quickly
- better physical security than your house, from fire risks to it being stolen
- won't draw a big target on your home connection which yknow is a critical point for many people
@CobaltVelvet I've occasionally wondered if you could run a personal mail or web server with a caching proxy server at a CoLo but have most of your archive at home on a home connection.
That should protect your home network, and could limit how much data is exposed to cloud attacks.
Though that's only likely to work for services with a fairly small number of users.
