I'm confused. Is the federated feed everyone or just the people your followings follow ?

@Siphonay I originally assumed the prior, then the latter, now I'm back to the prior. because when u just join an instance, there are a stream of toots in your federated, follows/followers at 0

@Siphonay I have no idea, but am interested to know as well. My initial guess it is rather references that the feed comes from all the different "instances" (= servers?) that are running.

@Gargoylezoo I think I'm tripping up on the terminology (especially "instance"), but I think I get the general idea. Thanks for clarifying!
@srayermann an instance is the @insert.namehere after someone's username. It means that their account is hosted on a different server. Each instance is run individually, operated by whoever has loaded the mastodon code onto an internet-connected computer.

@Siphonay if the federated is everyone, the more this keeps growing the more instances become a Haven to escape the constant stream of chaos. so maybe picking an instance carefully, and one that suits u is more important than we think
@Siphonay It is everyone but only everyone at other instances that your instance knows about. Make connections with people on other instances and get the other people on your instance to do the same. The more the merrier.
