Just curious: how many of y'all work somewhere that actively discourages knowing what your coworkers earn? I had to make some aggressively pointed estimations to get a coworker to give it up.

@Mainebot Every private institution. The only time I knew what anyone's salary was is when I worked for the state (public record).

@Mainebot where I am, not even managers are allowed to know what their employees make, or even if they got a raise.

@stoof that's actually pretty weird!

@Mainebot Private university here; pay range for job classifications are accessible to all staff so I could make a decent guess at what my coworkers make, from knowing what they do and how long they've been here. But to know anyone's exact salary I'd have to ask them. No one actively discourages that but I can only think of a couple of coworkers I'd be truly comfortable asking. It's just sort of culturally Not Done.

@nopetopus I work in a small company with a gigantic disparity between 'tech' employees, the owners, and everyone else.

@Mainebot I do. I'm part of the problem, though. In my company, finding out what I make will not increase their wages, but probably decrease everyone's, and people who know what I make are really displeased with me. The hostility from having had that discussion has been awful...

@stillinhere which is just a 100% anti-union tactic, it's gross.

@Mainebot Oh I know. My store has a union, but it doesn't always change things fast enough.

@Mainebot you ought to hear a coworker of mine who is anti-union rail against our union any time she gets a chance. I think she's convinced everyone our union has made life much, much worse.

Admitting that I am topped out in my position and that when they got rid of my last position which was night shift with the $1 differential, they let me keep the dollar since that was on them has not made me exactly beloved.

@stillinhere if they hate being in a union, they should quit.

@Mainebot You should see the bite marks in my tongue.

@Mainebot One day I'm going to scream, "Walmart's right down the road! Help yourself!"

@stillinhere @Mainebot "personalized" deals are standard fare in all major corporations as far as I can tell
