I'm still pretty confused about this platform. Is there a lot of communication across instances? Do people just use one account or is it common to have accounts on different instances?

Ah okay thanks! This is all pretty new to me so this helps a lot.
@JulesIsWeird you can follow and mention people of any instance, so yes there's a lot of communication by design. most people have a main account on their favorite instance, some have a secondary especially on more specialized instances.

@JulesIsWeird It is quite common to have accounts on different instances. And most people follow/are followed across instances.
But really it's up to you how you want to use it.
If you want to see what's happening on other instances, you can use the federated timeline. Quite a few of the people I follow I found this way, but it can get a bit overwhelming. Or you follow some people on your local instance, and they'll boost toots from people on other instances, so you could follow these as well.
