Golden Week is just 2 weeks off. GW, as it's known in Japan, is a week in which several public holidays are contained, including
April 29
The Emperor's Birthday (until 1988)
Greenery Day (1989-2006)
Shōwa Day (2007-present)
May 3
Constitution Memorial Day
May 4
Citizen's Holiday (1985-2006),
Greenery Day (2007-present)
May 5
Children's Day also known as Boys' Day.
(Thanks, Wikipedia.)
Many Japanese take much, if not all, of GW off. Some even travel overseas.
This may sound lavish, but when you compare it to the fact that for the rest of the year, they will take next to nothing off, except again in August for Obon and New Year's, it's nothing compared to Western holidays/vacation time.
