"I propose to remove this blocking feature which is not in keeping with the spirit of Mastodon"
It's the story if one fucking idiot that comes on github to decide what "the spirit of Mastodon" is.
Privileged man sees free software made to help a group of people ;
Privileged man owns software, shits on the group it was helping, decides it's all about him and removes features that are not strictly made for his issues ;
Group tells him to go fuck himself instead, privileged man writes a 67 pages blog post about how he's being censored and we're breaking the federation ;
We've all left or died, privileged man wonders why and says we should speak up in public.
"but freedom of speech let's you defend yourself and convince people!" he will, understandably, argue.
No. That'd be great. That'd be amazing.
People have cognitive biases. They have ideologies they're ready to kill for even if you empirically prove them wrong. Religion is a perfect example.
People aren't rational machines and will burn you at the stake if that's what they want. Free speech won't save anyone against someone that doesn't want to understand.
@LottieVixen oh I'm not quoting this it's an example story.
@CobaltVelvet darn it :p
I usually can convince anyone of anything, only because I usually choose the most rational choice to begin with and consider other rational choices as valid.
But I cannot convince a very specific set of people. Convinced racists. Convinced transphobes. Convinced misogynists.
They're not searching for the truth, they found a position of power, believe in it and are ready to kill for it. Free speech can't save us. Only enforced tolerance and rationality will.
Meanwhile leave us the fuck alone.
@CobaltVelvet where are you quoting this gold from?
