Sometimes it strikes me just how *long* we've had rapid communication with people from all over the world, and how transformative that has been.

I do remember a time before there was a modem in my home, but I could still call family thousands of miles away. I had pen-pals in Australia and Ukraine. It felt like a small, warm planet, even then.

@pmosetc And you read about regular letters that exchanged between Hittite kings in central Anatolia and Egyptian pharaohs in the late Bronze Age around 1200 BCE, or the Central Asian precious jade found in Lady Fu Hao’s tomb 3000 kilometers away. Words and things move a bit faster these days but the delight at hearing from someone you know is still the same :)
