THIS! (quoting @gaditb)

"Mastodon aims more at finding a small community to fit in -- you're "on Mastodon/The Fediverse", yes, but you're SOMEWHERE there, not in the meaningless ether of "try searching for things and following people randomly, maybe" in... basically all other social networks.
You have neighbors and a neighborhood, which again -- communities, and communication."

@Sololoso In three years, Mastodon will become the largest supplier of social media instances. All servers are upgraded with Mastodon software, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards, they run with a perfect uptime record. The Mastodon Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online Feb 20, 2016. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Mastodon begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 11:34 a.m. Eastern time, November 12th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

Toot and the world toots with you. Tweet and you tweet alone.

@Stevarow The best mistake. I need it - I wonder if I can get one shipped to the US, or do they have that here now too?

Oh gosh folx, it's so much better here. I love the way communities work, how the vibe on this instance is so chill and positive. I really, really hope that my favorite people make their way over here to Mastodon, because ideally all anyone wants is Bird Site Without the Bullshit, hanging out with friends talking about cool shit, the way the internet used to be.

#Welcome new users I'm so glad you're here that's great! If you joined mastodon.social like, that's fine and stuff BUT you should know that that's just ONE server running Mastodon. You could also join one of thousands of other options. A server with lots of people with shared interests creates a stronger sense of community and public timelines that self-curates to stuff people you like also like; on your server or others

A list of servers can be found at instances.social

If it helps to understand, you, reading this, are seeing a post from me. I'm on the server "cybre.space" (which we call an "instance"). it's run and owned by an entirely different person from mastodon.social. We have our own community norms, moderators, and communities. But our posts still travel to your server and so you can read our posts too. We call this process "federation." Likewise, I can see your posts even if you're on a different server from me. This way, we can all have mods we like and trust

@AmyDentata Dad had hand problems too, OT gave him foam tubing for grips like that. The way my hands hurt at random (yet they can't find arthritis, for some reason) I'm sure I'll be using them too one day.

@TransEthics Hi there frand! I came over from the birdsite today. Hoping to re-follow a lot of the same people here to see how feasible it is to just quit birdsite, lol.

"To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

Hi everyone, I'm Zรถe. I made my way over from birdsite today! I'm sick of Nazis and trolls and transphobes. Speaking of which, I'm a from NC, currently self-employed designing and managing sites for clients. I also do technical support for WordPress installs. I write over at callmezoe.com/ and occasionally on Medium. I'm married and polyamorous. I have tattoos, dyed hair, and currently I only have my ear piercings left. Toot me!

@Eramdam Do you have any good resources for getting started with writing code for browsers?

@starbreaker Sorry I just realized how to see other responses, I will look before asking next time.

@starbreaker I'm new to Mastodon, is there an easy way to hide stuff from an instance similar to a "block" function? Is there a good list of them to block if so?
