Arguing for stuff like anti-DRM is pretty frustrating because you can give a good page-long argument and the other person is just like "but my convenience feetures and triple-A titles"

I may "win" the argument but it doesn't get the point across when they say something like "but if I lose all my games I can just pirate them"

@arx Interesting! As it happens, DigitalOcean just announced their object Storage and have an early access signup that grants 1TB free until the end of October. I'll definitely keep those other ones in mind though - thanks for the link!

digitalocean.com/products/stor Hmmmmm that looks like a good deal though. Especially if I want to start up my own Mastodon instance for my friends

AWS does seem to like to hide their costs... looks to be around $9 / month per instance. That's still cheaper than DigitalOcean's equivalent service at $10 / month

What are your thoughts about the GNU GPL versus the BSD licence?

@dirtycommo When it comes to the main difference (copyleft), I understand why some people use it and it may even be important for such software as the Linux kernel to prevent people from re-distributing a basic piece of a system to be oppressive or costly.

Most of what I work on as a software dev are convenience tools, higher level software, so more permissive licenses make sense to me. I like to license with ISC because I'm a minimalist.

I think I've found a life goal: I want to work on GNU/Hurd

@yetitaxxi we can already in theory and kfc delivery was announced today

@tqft I still have the McDonald's app just in case

When McDonald's rolls out online ordering, if the world survives the next three months after that then I have hope in humanity still

coming back to mastodon after a few hours away and looking at my timeline like

"mastodon is dead" directly translates to "i don't see a way to monetize my presence here" in shithead speak

10000000% done with "freedom of speech" being applied in situations not dealing with *government* speech oppression which is what FOS refers to and i am especially done with ppl using it to defend nazis. you god damn clods

The US has been installing packages from source for years. I guess they figured they could fix the dependencies as they arose. They say they're still updating through official channels, but it doesn't seem to be very effective anymore. The few packages it does update can't change the config files because they're so outdated.

Also for some reason, there's traditionally only one kernel maintainer and each one the US brings on keeps breaking userspace

Thank you all, patrons!

The more money, the better. It will support Octodon first, the rest will help my Mastodon hosting project and make my life better.

@XOR Always code as if you'll be maintaining it at three in the morning with a hangover.

In other words, don't require a lot of thought or memory beyond what is in the code.
