What are your thoughts about the GNU GPL versus the BSD licence?

@dirtycommo When it comes to the main difference (copyleft), I understand why some people use it and it may even be important for such software as the Linux kernel to prevent people from re-distributing a basic piece of a system to be oppressive or costly.

Most of what I work on as a software dev are convenience tools, higher level software, so more permissive licenses make sense to me. I like to license with ISC because I'm a minimalist.

@yetitaxxi I was talking with a comrade about the difference between the GPL and permissive licences. He said he liked permissive licences better because they didn't reserve as many rights.

I fee like I believe in the free software philosophy, though. I think it is probably important to ensure no-one can ever profit from the sale of closed source derivatives of software.

Then again I am a communist, so you can see how that makes sense to me.
