@pybyte you mean something other than the local timeline? That includes some* toots from other instances but it's predominantly your instances' toots.
*As a conjectured qualification, if someone on your instance boosts or favorites something from another instance I think it can show up on the local timeline... potentially following does that too.
I just developed Mastodon Stats, a site that shows the statistics of all instances mastodon gathered in real time. Have a look at https://mastodonstat.herokuapp.com
@CobaltVelvet Have you set up a Patreon or equivalent for Octodon?
@keithpp @rateldajer @CobaltVelvet You're defining Mastodon as "a network" when really:
Mastodon = email
instance = email host
octodon.social = gmail.com
@user@instance = email@address.com
The mistake you're making is thinking Mastodon = gmail.com.
and a dark theme and code of conduct classification. We really need that.
@casper @CobaltVelvet I can't speak or read French very well, but from what I did gather, there were some users who violated some of the terms of use for their instances (one of them being on this instance) and were banned. They cited freedom of speech as justification (alluding to Mastodon's supposed competition Twitter I think). They don't understand that instances are managed by individuals: with those individuals rules. If they don't like the rules, they can make their own instances.
@CivilianZero then I stick to my Logitech suggestion ๐๐ That's what I use daily as a developer.
@ashfurrow is your instance topic focused on tech?
@CivilianZero Logitech can't be beat for those two conditions. But if you have a specific use (like for gaming versus normal day to day activity) we could probably give you better suggestions
When you say "I'm gonna leave" and your #puppy lays on your clothes to prevent you. #guilttrip
@cmaresh :beers: No one should go without beer on #NationalBeerDay but you'll have to thank @jd, I just made some of the selections.
If someone doesn't write a client for #Mastodon called #Pineapple, the efforts behind this memetic grassroots marketing campaign for fruit will be, well, fruitless. :pineapple:
Looking at you, @acw , we've come this far in such a short amount of . time.
About risk profile:
- Mastodon is like email because you can't delete federated toots
- Mastodon is like twitter in that Google's search bots index it, unless your admins robot.txt it away
- Mastodon is like being a teenager because the people that own your instance can see all your private stuff
Have a talk with your admin about their policies.
By default, assume everyone will be able to read your toots forever.
@cmaresh ๐ can I get a confidence interval with that?
Moon through this 76mm f4 telescope. And the same picture with a little processing. https://octodon.social/media/FFtnrqlb-x7ysxzxxCE https://octodon.social/media/8UavP6DPFkhUVAwBiwc https://octodon.social/media/03W9ttm9JsWfmkKgOso
@Elex try Elixer! Or Ruby on Rails (that's what mastodon is built on)
@casper I think the original intention was to have "topic-oriented" instances. That way communities were in some way separated but still discoverable (with federation). It's certainly different than other social media because of the [in]direct disparity of the population of users.
As a developer, I think the decentralization aspect is a very interesting experiment both in terms of app architecture design and from a social aspect.
