@lpdesa She is a great writer! I read #TheNakesake a little while ago and now I want to get through all her work. She has a great interview on the #FilmStruck streaming service, if you’re a subscriber. I’ve been looking forward to this trip for some time. Woo hoo! And thank you!
@Iuckyduck Thank you! I’m switching jobs soon after, so it’s serendipitous that this planned vacation fell during the transition. My wife has been there for the last couple weeks with her family, and I’m meeting up with her. She gets to have an entire month away from the responsibilities of real life!
My two week vacation in #India starts tomorrow! Fourteen hours in the air means I need to pick the perfect reading material. I’ve selected #JhumpaLahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies and the Collected Fictions of #Borges. I have a couple flights within my two weeks as well (to Goa) so these #books will make for excellent company!
@Lexialex @starbreaker @GinnyMcQueen I found out about this after joining as well! The link is a great summation of Mastodon. Instances are groups under the Mastodon umbrella, so there's no one Mastodon location like Twitter or Facebook. I think using hashtags will allow us to communicate and connect with anyone using Mastodon in any Instance/group. @CobaltVelvet runs this group and looks to be doing a pretty good job! https://octodon.social/about/more
@ajroach42 Great film! It pairs with Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich really well for a double feature. Like I said, too much media, never enough time!
@ajroach42 Augh! Gotcha watch that one. It's hard to not pick one Vertigo/Psycho/Rear Window as the best Hitchcock, but my favorite is Rope. It's succinct, I love the long takes, and the fact that the events are occurring in real time adds so much tension to the already intense plot.
@ajroach42 What's your favorite Hitchcock film?
@ajroach42 I gotcha. It's probably because I've seen it so many time that Kane isn't work for me. It's definitely a fascinating character study more than pulp entertainment.
I love running through film series as well! Right now I'm going through the self-described desire trilogy by Luca Guadagnino. Call Me By Your Name is the third one with I am Love and A Bigger Splash being the first two. Fascinating stuff. Guadagnino will also be directing the Suspiria remake, which I'm look forward to.
@ajroach42 I was unimpressed with Kane after my first watch, but I kept going back to it. It's such a rich and layered film. I've heard the complaint that it's cold and unemotional, but I disagree. Won't get into spoilers, of course. Never feel bad about not having seen the labeled classics. There's so much media to absorb these days. Get to the films in your queue at your own pace!
@ajroach42 The reputation of that trilogy is intimidating indeed! I avoided Citizen Kane for the longest time because of the same reason. Now I can't remember a time before Orson Welles was in my life. If you have a FilmStruck account, check out The Big City. It's actually my favorite Ray film. Films on Netflix that may be a good intro to modern Indian cinema: Queen, Dangal, and Lagaan.
@lpdesa Ditto! It's scary to try something new and unfamiliar, but I'm getting the hang of this. Feels refreshing to not be bombarded with adverts and the constant bullying that dominated my Twitter feed even after muting/blocking countless accounts.
@ajroach42 You can stream it via browser here: https://webistrying.wordpress.com or find me on iTunes at Darn That Dream. I'm only a few episode in and am trying to incorporate Indian culture as well. So the most recent episode is a few Indian folktales I found. For classic Indian cinema, I say check out Satyajit Ray's films in the Criterion Collection. I can also recommend some mainstream Bollywood films if you ever wanted to give them a go!
Hello, all! My name is Web. I'm a #CSI, a #film geek, #gamer, #jazz enthusiast, and a pop culture junkie. I record a monthly #podcast about Indian cinema/culture called Darn That Dream. I studied #biology and #forensics in school and am very passionate about #science and #education. I want to one day be a #teacher at the high school or college level.
@bstacey Thank you so much! That's a great idea. It's always daunting to start fresh in any social media platform.
I’m genuinely excited to be microblogging on a platform not infested with Nazis. It‘s a fresh start; a vast landscape is at my feet to shape as I see fit. So much love to @Lexialex for taking the leap! I hope others follow suit, and we cultivate a positive experience on Mastodon. 😊
