Game of Toots
I am too scared to AFK๐ .
I just received an unexpected guest who was trying to coax me to come out and be social. Tried to explain to him what Mastdon is. Then show him.
Tried to explain to him home timeline and federated timeline. I explained the nice instances vs horrid instances. I prefaced it with a cursory introduction to the culture wars.
Guest promptly left. I think I scared him.
|'m going to go outside now. ๐
@vfrmedia @stefanieschulte @pzmyers @OldandConfused @starbreaker this is a thing yes.
@Tezcatlipoca sometimes Friday is meaningless and depressing for freelancers and the unemployed. :grin
Sometimes you end up with a lonely Friday. And sometimes you have to eat a microwave dinner on Fri night. And sometimes the plastic is too hot for your hands to hold on the way out of the microwave. And sometimes you have to regrab mid run to the fringes that hold the film and as you are running to the TV tray saying "fuck fuck fuck" with burning hands, the wind from your sock-footed running cools the tray into a U shape and your food falls out. Didn't teach us that shit on TGIF. But that's life
BREAKING: White guy, can code, in country with social welfare & free uni, devs FOSS app, earns 2,000 dollars p.m. on Patreon mashable.com/2017/04/06/eugen-rochko-mastodon-interview/
What I have learned:
- DMs between Mastodon users are not visible to people outside of Mastodon even if someone on GNU Social or anything else is following both people.
- Unlisted posts don't federate at all, and so are not visible to people on GNU Social or anything else.
- DMs are visible to admins of both the sending and receiving instance, unencrypted.
- A DM sent to a non-Mastodon instance is received as a public post, and there's a disclaimer that warns you of that before sending.
@starbreaker well said. Godspeed and good night.
@starbreaker Sure i get it. ANY government tho? That's a very Western-centric view. He would probably tell my gov to fuck off. Thx for the stimulating chat.
@voidstar I am a technoweenie, but I know the virtue of hiding in plain site and looking inconspicuous. In some places a Signal confirmation SMS can get you a visit from state security, a confirmation SMS from WhatsApp is totes normal though.
@starbreaker really? Its basically a data broking startup kit. https://octodon.social/media/Jlhcs9jiGv4h8Au9wHw
@starbreaker one is quite privilleged to be able to trust a hobbyist hacker. Under these circumstances, ones life does not usually depend on it. Whether cryptohipsters like it or not, under repressive regimes, Facebook is simply harder to pwn. I really do hope people don't recommend this to people under real phsyical threat from their states.
@starbreaker I think noone wants their empire pwned. The hobbyists might give a shit, but they are human too whats to stop them becoming freelance data brokers. https://octodon.social/media/rLjgHEBrWDoC9p9KZdY
Derp. There is a tab for following your instance's timeline, and for following the federated timeline. Where do I see just a timeline of my followers?
@haeck excellent resource, THX!
I can see this federation ending either Lord of the Flies-like or by data Goatse.
So you are up against a non-five eyes state Actor, with non-NSA size budget but a decent army of hackers. What protects you better? One or two people running your instance as a hobby, or Zuck?
