why someone start a new instance? for what? i can't feel any longterm motivation...

@vlgk Some do it so they can be the only one with a specific name, like funny@joke.social. Others just want to spread out the service and set up communities for their interests. Some might just do it for a fun project.
@vlgk well users of instance A can't see local timeline of users from instance B, so it can be a club of interests. Moreover admin can sell native ads for such instances. For example instance with 50k users united with gaming. Perfect place to advertise out coming games.

and there's no real disadvantage in using other servers than Eugen's.
@vlgk set up your own membership guidelines and network rules. federate only with instances you want the community to associate with.

@vlgk as an instance admin you can decide the community guidelines of your instance and also which instances yours federates with , things like that , features etc.

@vlgk I think people create them if they want to start a group of people with similar interests
