Alan Turing bday, suicide mention

Alan Turing was born today

He was gay and neurodivergent, famous for 'Turing machine,' a model for modern/general purpose computers

he was also chemically castrated by his government for being gay (instead of prison time), and later committed suicide at 41

Rest in Power, Alan :heart_cybre:

Will watch with interest as the Apple faithful rationalise the shift to ARM & the accompanying need to buy all new hw, new adaptors, etc. at 4-20x the commodity price... & their trumpeting "ease of use" while privacy, self-sufficiency, & data sovereignty continue to fade to a quaint memory.

I just discovered that the TA for my graduate level computer science class at NYU makes the same amount of money that I get to solo-teach (adjunct) a class at the iSchool at Pratt

(I'm not mad, I have a full-time gig and the adjuncting is to pay off loans, but it is very wild to observe!!)

#Facebook just bought #Mapillary.

Move your images to a #FOSS *community run* project instead! How? Simple:

1. Download your images: github.com/gitouche-sur-osm/ma

2. Upload to #OpenStreetCam:
OpenStreetCam.org

3. Enjoy giving a giant, fat middle finger to #Zuckerberg. 🌻 🌈 🌻

4. Boost and have a nice day!

I think the reason I'm holding off on writing "Happy Juneteenth" is the feeling, the knowledge that if George Floyd was alive today, and nothing had been burned down, and so on, I don't think I would have noticed it or had it brought to my attention. And that feels . . . bad. It feels bad to stand up and start talking about a holiday that I only sorta remember from year to year. It's not my holiday, I know that. It's not for me, nor should it be, and I don't want to pretend that it is.

why is this a hot webdev take

Corona cases: US vs EU

Tbh I’m shocked that one of the biggest, most developed and richest countries has such problems with reducing the number of new Corona cases

probably like 90% of the inquiries to Ask a Manager would not exist if the letter writers were in a union, my god Americans truly do not realize how abusive most workplaces are and how individualizing problems is one of the most effective ways in which management prevents possible unionization or solidarity actions

wackiness levels are 72% and falling

So NYC is disbanding its plainsclothes units of officers, which came out to be 600 cops.

1) thats a lot of fucking plainsclothes cops

2) apparently that's still only 2 (two) percent of all the cops in the nypd

3) according to the ny times, those 2% of cops were rresponsible for 31% of cop shootings in nyc
