I came to mastodon because it didn't have harassment and abuse like the rest of social media projects, broadly. It was the community's biggest, most interesting feature. To me, it felt like web 1.0. Everyone was weird, everyone went with it and made friends.
I don't want to see harassment or abuse here. I think it doesn't belong here. This is a place for people to be who they are, and for everyone else to be okay with it.

"They mean American universities are full of people who believe things like this:
Species arose through natural selection.
No author of any gospel ever met Jesus.
Homosexuality is a normal variant in human behaviour.
The United States lost a war against Vietnam.
Human activity is a significant cause of climate change.
The United States has worse public health than do countries with nationalized health care."

An outside view of U.S. universities, from British legal philosopher Leslie Green:
"When the right claims that US universities have been taken over by ‘liberals’, and that faculty and students of ‘conservative’ opinions are afraid to speak up, they do not mean that its campuses are now swamped by people who think we should restrict liberty only to prevent harm to others, or who demand that social inequalities benefit the worst-off."
I have had this very conversation myself, many times.
It's remarkably similar to talking to economists about growth and thermodynamics.
I had a conversation with a bridge engineer one evening not long ago. I said, “Bridges, they are nice, and vital, but they fall down a lot.”
He looked at me with a well-worn frustration and replied, “Falling down is what bridges do. It’s the fate of all bridges to fall down, if you don’t understand that, you don’t understand bridges.”
No, I don't have an anxiety issue. Yes, that is the cbd talking. (I also don't have joint pain or a migraine. This stuff is pretty cool.)
currently the code is very bad and it lacks caching
i just did ~20k requests to twitter dot com
what do people use anymore for one on one conversations in text that isn't SMS or Google chat or Facebook messenger? asking because I have no clue and the train for this has left the station for me. is it ICQ again? that would be weird.
Remember: You have far more control over reality than you may realize. Exercise that control.
do I have shitty opinions? yes.
am I trying to learn my way better? yes.
should that count for anything if I say something shitty? no.
Imagine living in the emotionally stunted world of a GamerGate/MRA/alt right shitlord, where life is an eternal Hobbesian war of Alphas, Betas and "hypergamous" women betraying each other and seeking the upper hand, the worse shame conceivable is to be a "cuck" someone else has gotten the better of, and any expression of sympathy or human decency is just a con -- "virtue signalling" -- to gain advantage over others. Euthanasia would be a blessing for such people.
also uhhhh if anything i said there (or toot here!) is problematic / wrong / uncomfortable please DM me, i'm trying to do my best and feedback is important
Anyone else mildly concerned with how hard it is to laugh? Like, not for reasons like depression or trauma or anything similar. I just DONT LAUGH. I find thinks to be funny, I *think* I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm just really sarcastic and only laugh when caught off guard and that doesn't happen often. And even when it does, I don't have those "OH MY GOD I CANT TAKE IT NO MORE" painful, hysterical kinds of moments. Hmm
I would like to boast that this was functionally neutral, too, the program it was involved with still does everything that it did before. Of course, the downside is that it was entirely a result of golang's vendoring.
Issuing a PR like this feels good.
There is no nicer feeling than unburdening oneself of this kind of garbage, right after having done so. Goodbye again, linkedin.
I mean this in all seriousness. I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do there. Treating it like a social network is certainly a mock-worthy category error. Communicating with people there is the same way.
Is it just a convenient portal to give recruiters who don't understand what I do the opportunity to have me come help them sell ads?
What is it for?!
I saw someone on linkedin whose description included "social influencer" and it got me thinking: What the heck am I doing on linkedin?
