I realized the other day I hadn't listened to any podcasts in like, 5 years, so I re-loaded the iPod & decided to start with old, out-of-date MetaFilter podcasts. Started with January 2012. I don't know why. Listening to Cortex, Mathowie & Jessamyn ramble on about stuff 5 years hence has been more amusing than I thought it would be, actually, & is reminding me about all sorts of cool web stuff I forgot -- & making me sad about This Is My Jam. I have a 20 minute commute - this is taking forever.

My favorite part of mastodon is all the fine folks who see something that clearly does not have them as the intended target audience, and go "that is so cool!" instead of "I demand that this be changed into something I, the protagonist of reality, can understand"

And that "cheating" sense is something I'm trying to power on past, to say, fuck it, there's a whole history of modern art unmoored from fusty Old Masters mystique. My hand is unsteady? I need a sharp straight line? Do whatever makes it happen!

But it's still there in the back of my head, in the wrestling match between different things I could do when I sit down to paint. Better to use a tool, force a straight line? Better to freehand and train my unsteady arm? Better to find a compromise? Etc.
