This past weekend I wondered where all the cooperative, collective, and capitalist-adjacent responses to basic infrastructure were, and mastonauts sent me down an internet hole on open source design, manufacturing, and appropriate technology.

@sydneyfalk I think I'm getting where you're at on this, like it's a 'culture of mean' that reinforces an appreciation of brutally, lionizing it as a fast solution to all things.
Some of us don't want to be this way, and work differently. TBH I was surprised at the "anti-bullying" campaigns in schools -- usually we get the "boys will be boys" kind of excuse -- so I am hopeful in some contexts that we internalize the rationality of kindness. Hard road, but I'm for it.

Yup, we don't need assholes anymore (the figurative kind lol). It's destructive behavior that might have saved your life in a hostile environment back in the day, like snarling and so on, but modern society has removed almost all need for this (plus its toxicity is self-harming). Especially online. Jerks tend to romanticize pwning other people in their head, but why? There's just... nothing there.
@sydneyfalk Well I think we are born with conflicting tendencies. We've learned to stop pooping in the woods, so there's that. We also yawn together, so that's a thing, too.
The trouble isn't just that we're built with these urges, it's that we haven't been able to manage them as society rapidly invents more and more powerful tools we can use to satisfy these urges on grander scales
@sydneyfalk We're still carrying atavistic tendencies that worked well prehistorically in small groups or individually but don't scale properly to a larger more integrated and abstracted society; assholism is one of these pockmarks.
And the jerk primally intuits that his jerkiness makes the world a better place -- a 'mean' to an end you see -- but we are far too stupid as a species to design a glowing future through trying morally, let alone through shitty acts.
