@NthTensor @SuzanEraslan my biggest concern is if the local instance owners will perhaps use the data/toots for malicious uses, and the fact that since the code is open source, other folks can prod into vulnerabilities.

other than that, i find this to be a refreshing change from the bird site

@tristan probing for vulnerabilities is exactly why open source projects are safer than closed source! More people can look over the code to try to find problems.

I love bird-site too much to be wanting mastodon to replace it, but I hope it becomes something unique where people can use it for a different use-case.

@tristan It's interesting that this hadn't occurred to me, but seems to have occurred to everyone else. I think we're all a bit shell shocked from Big Corporate social media, but what @NthTresor said is right. When it's open, we can expose abuses more easily.
