I'm thinking about buying some old server hardware on ebay and build Gentoo based server/workstation for coding.

I'm even thinking about thin client for it and some remote Xserver session. That's of course optional - currently my whole devenv is in terminal (vim and friends). Duno if this will be cheaper then building some budget PC, but sure will be more fun.

@GeekDaddy Can not recommend!! Full Stop!! I had this exact thought and did it and it was super frustrating. Picked up dual E5-2640 on ebay built alittle workstation. Issues you are going to hit 1. finding parts that fit these sockets. 2. Cooling is a PITA because they expect to be run below room temp server farms. eventually had a to put a box fan on the side of the case to prevent overheating. 3. energy use is insane. I swapped out my workstation for a used i5 and my power bill dropped by 20$
