So I tried and failed, but here's an idea of someone to run with: Build a simple front facing mastodon head out of octagons... (I tried with various sized octagons for each of head, ears, trunk, eyes with subtle tonal differences for shading...got too messy though!...maybe I'll try again later in MODO instead of pixelmator...)
@orielle that's an interesting project. I would try that, but I don't have much time now. :/
