@starbreaker I'm not saying thay shouldn't have the space, I'm saying that being federated implies a set of social rules. We can't both frown at people who don't use CW for politics and not frown upon untagged NSFW pictures and videos.

switter.at is a social space, which is part of a broader social space (the fediverse) and of everybody blocks switter.at for the reasons you did, then a few of their users silenced the whole instance. Which is unfair.

@starbreaker It would probably be a shame if Mastodon became a set of two separate fediverses that block each other, one wanting to be "completely free" and the other "completely safe". CW on everything vs CW on nothing, basically.

@tiesselune The only problem that I see with "CW on everything" is that CW text counts against the toot length limit. That, and people might actually have to think before they toot.

If it were a separate 100 character field as of Mastodon 3.0, that would be awesome.

CWs aren't part of the ostatus standard, so most implementations of it don't have CWs. Your slippery slope argument is sort of undermined by the (relatively) peaceful coexistence between gnu social and mastodon.

You're of course free to mute or block whoever you want, but I'm not sure it's necessary to map your concern to a 'think of the fediverse!' argument.

@celesteh well CWs have been created to address one of the problems of ostatus, as an improvement. Standardization follows usage; they might become part of the standard if useful enough. In this case, they could make an open standard popular enough to make it mainstream by allowing people to feel free and safe at the same time.

Of course we can also mute, block or avoid the federated timeline altogether. But that might drive people away from Mastodon.

@DaveHiggins Well that's not so much "law" teaching than it is the basics of social rules, laws included, but also norms and such. It doesn't have to be written/mandatory to have an effect on society :) But yes, we basically agree on that.

@tiesselune My brevity decreased clarity: law - at least when I was taught it - included an introduction to rights, liberties, interests, and the why's and how's of society.

So, I saw a basic legal education as covering the various ways of balancing group and self.

@DaveHiggins Haha I've been practicing a lot , thanks. And yes, I'm french 😉 My mom trained me early on and I traveled a lot as a teen. Not to mention I now give video courses online with foreign students from various places, and my sister moved to live in Washington, so I practice quite a lot. Thanks anyway 😜
