@forteller this is the one where all the add-ons I rely on stop working?

Republicans: mass shootings are not about guns, it's a mental health problem

Also Republicans: we're cutting mental health treatment

Also also Republicans: mental health history shouldn't be held against you if you want to buy a gun

@natecull If you have separate symbols/concepts for "false", "unknown", "zero", "doesn't exist" and "end of list" instead of overloading the concept of "nil" then I think you can make it work.

@CobaltVelvet Semantic web / RDF / linked data is one way to model internet resources in a protocol-independent manner, depends on what you are trying to do

@natecull Isn't urbit something like this? Except it invents a bunch of new nonsense terms for standard computer science concepts and the creator is a Nazi.

RIP AIM

Not that I ever cared for it much, but back in college the dorm hallways would echo with the bleep and bloop of messages sent and received.

Just goes to show that you can have a technology with 100s of millions of users and have it all turn to sand in just a few years.

@cypnk the second edition of the Lord of the Rings was published in the mid 60s, probably not a cooincidence

@luizirber that's great, thanks for the link!

Fuck man, the glory days of DOS are now as far behind us now as the glory days of the PDP-11 were when I first started programming.

@22 @wim_v12e Probably worth going if you are in the area, but you can get great ramen all over the city. Kyoto is a tourist city but it is mostly Japanese tourists who have high expectations.

@22 @wim_v12e some of my favorites: Fushmi Inari (fox mountain), Tofukuji (temple with a lovely rock garden), Arashiyama (monkey mountain), philosopher's walk.

boost if you still use print statements as debug

@neon @chr does it make the AIM chimes when you toot?

OH: all your wikipedia edits will be from Docker Dildo Man

@kara_dreamer @mona @tobascodagama @natecull The halting problem is the upper bound here, the constraint language has to strictly less powerful than the actual code it is describes, the abstraction is what makes it tractable

The awesome and also baffling thing about mastodon is that people on the other side of the world are fav/booting my toot before I even manage to reload the page. Do toots travel back in time so the fediverse got them a few seconds before I hit send? Its like a Philip K Dick novel.

I think a lot of computing can be summed up as "we tried the elegant thing but it was too slow, so we made it more complex / compromised the design, and now it's fast and ugly instead"
