@mrgah @tcql yeah - i think there may have been a time when the hand signals were well understood generally because they were drilled into people in driver's ed (and you saw them in actual use).
experience in both cars w/out turn signals and on bikes does not suggest that this has been the case for... a while.
@brennen @mrgah i learned to drive in the early 2000's and we still had it ...
probably depends by state
also, one of those things most people cram so they can pass the test and then never need so they forget.
driving in the city, you should definitely be familiar with bike signaling, but for folks in the country it doesn't really matter if cars don't even signal ๐

for the record, can I say that no one where I'm from in the US understands the 'turning right' hand symbol?
I've switched over to the European system of signaling with both arms because it's far easier for non-cyclists to understand
