an apology (LONG, read in external view) Show more
four months ago, on may 1st, 2017, i silenced kitty.town and blamed Ginny McQueen for "inciting overblown drama" (to paraphrase my justification). this was a mistake: no one should be made to feel like talking about their harassment is “drama” or “discourse.” this fact was quickly pointed out to me by concerned users on my instance, and i reversed the silence and made a post to the effect that the silence had been a mistake. because of its non-committal wording and because it was a private post, this was not interpreted as an apology or an admission of guilt by Ginny, the wronged party.
to give some context, i had just come out of a several-hours-long discussion in which myself and several other admins tried to convince the admin of a large instance to a user who had harassed Ginny, and make a public apology for his insistence that there had been no harassment. arguments and indirect mentions had been floating about this for over a day, and it seemed as though convincing him was the best way to bring an end to it.
after that conversation, i was tired, and irritated; i had only been an instance administrator for a month and was still trying to figure out what it meant to create a pleasant moderated experience for my users. the opinion of the community at the time was overwhelmingly that “drama” or “discourse” were undesirable on mastodon (a toxic stance that both i personally and we as a community are working to move past), and in light of this i assumed that muting the instance of the person whose posts had seemed to be the source of the drama would be an acceptable way to achieve this.
so in case this post ever reaches kitty.town, and i'm not sure whether it will, let me be clear that this is a full public apology for my actions of four months ago. i was wrong to silence kitty.town and wrong to blame Ginny for reacting to harassment. i'm sorry.
i'm also sorry that everyone in the english-speaking fediverse had to be party to this conflict, and that i was not more open about it at the time. consider this an explanation and an attempted resolution for the unspoken drama in the air tonight.
to everyone on cybre.space, if you are concerned about the moderation of the instance, please be aware that this happened 4 months ago, that i have incorporated what i learned from this event into my decision-making, and that i have been more careful in my moderation actions since then. i am also now working equally with @nightpool and we are weighing our decisions together before acting. if you have a concern, my DMs are open. if you don’t want to talk to me, @nightpool’s are as well.
thanks, and have a good evening.
