👋 hey friends
I've not talked much about work here, but our company (and the team I'm on!) is pretty great, and we're looking to grow. So I work at www.mapbox.com. We build software to make it possible for developers to add maps & location data to their websites and apps.
I can talk a little more about the particular job in a minute but first I want to talk about what I think makes us special:
My team in particular is working with GPS data to make the map better by:
- creating realtime & predictive traffic modeling
- finding unmapped areas
- learning more about how people move all over the world
We've got a job post out here: https://www.mapbox.com/jobs/652511/ (there are also many other posts too)
As we have at the bottom of all our posts, "Sound interesting, but not sure you tick all the boxes? Please apply – we emphasize teaching and learning, and there's tons of room to grow"
@paulsheprow yea, we do our best 😁 it's a bit harder as you grow in size, because the demand for "ready to run" employees is higher, but we're also a group whose leadership is dedicated to the idea of fostering growth in tech
@tcql yeah, y'all are ok I GUESS
@tcql will you be in Boston for that shindig in August?
@sarasomewhere not sure yet! I know there'll be some folks from Mapbox there though, and some talks by us.
@tcql cool cool - I feel like a geo-masto-IRL-meetup should happen
@sarasomewhere definitely! are there many other geo folks on here that you've connected with?
TBH pretty much all of the people I'm connected with on mastodon are total randos (which I sort of actually like)
@tcql I know @Ianturton & @Geomenke & @bitner, @Spatial_Punk will be there, probably many others that I'm forgetting right now (check my follows for more geo folks)!
@tcql I notice very few "remote" postings. I'm not on the market, but that would deter me. FWIW. As a total stranger.
OTOH, ✨everything✨ else about y'all's hiring process and philosophy looks 🌈amazing🌈.
Our of curiosity: What's y'all's tech stack like?
@benhamill we do remote, but usually it depends on the person / team so we don't directly advertise in postings.
AWS, mostly node.js, some C++, other stuff
@tcql Cool. Y'all's HTTP API documentation is real nice at a glance. Layout's very similar to Stripe's and something else I don't recall. Y'all generate it from some kinda spec, or...?
(I have Opinions about API docs).
@benhamill uh depends, some sections of our documentation are curated more or less by hand, other things are autogenerated
@tcql Well, my compliments to whoever does that work. It looks real nice.
@tcql Any workplace that says this and means it is going to pull in (and retain) higher-quality staff https://octodon.social/media/qkLAwUu5Z5NYD1JKJ9E
