Got a #RaspberryPi 2B that I don't use anymore. Could that host a private #mastodon #instance just for me an few friends?
Toot yourself people, you can even boost this status if you feel crazy enough
@tbouron In my experience, the latency gets pretty crazy on rasppis when they start doing DB heavy stuff. I tried to set up a Quassel instance on one for my IRC stuff, and it got to ~2-5 second latency pretty fast. Tolerable, but pretty crappy.
Storage and ethernet sharing the USB bus makes it pretty tricky. It'd be fun, though. I'm curious what benchmarks you'd get.
@tbouron @ikea_femme that feels accurate to me too. A cheap VPS would probably run you about the same in power costs with comparable/better performance. I'd like to hear if you try it though.
@willhopkins @ikea_femme Well you know, in the spirit of decentralized and DIY, I have this PI so I should make a use of it, sounds like a nice little project that I can run from home
And it's cheaper too! 😄
@ikea_femme @willhopkins I'll let you know the results. Probably going to try next week as I'll be alone at home for most of the week
@tbouron @ikea_femme Enjoy! And let us know how it goes. I'd love to hear how it works out.
@ikea_femme Aye, I know the ethernet and usb port share the same bus but for an instance with only a few users (talking about 10 max) I would hope it would be sufficient.
Although, I haven't really looked at the architecture of #mastodon yet so what I'm saying here is total speculation for now 😁
Bottom line is, needs to be tested!
@tbouron - Should work fine.
