BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Hilary Mantel's A Place of Greater Safety. If you like Mantel or the French Revolution, or just the sense of impending, unstoppable disaster, you will enjoy this book.
I read it last year, but just saw it on the shelf and was reminded of how much I enjoyed it.
@RexfordGTugwell I don't know if I can handle the sense of impending, unstoppable disaster *just at the moment*, but Hilary Mantel is my Goddess. I found "Fludd," the first book I ever read by her, completely randomly in a used book bin in Athens at the same time that I found "Lolly Willowes" by Sylvia Townsend Warner. Best bargain bin book day ever!
@RexfordGTugwell hah! I probably know a little too much not to feel the doom. But her writing is delicious, so maybe worth it. I am in love with "Beyond Black," which is such a weird / dark yet funny but also ... [gah, cannot articulate] book I hesitate to push it, for fear that people are going to be upset with me after reading, but man, she just NAILED some niche bizarre responsive thing in me with that book. After reading I was like, WHY DOESN'T ANYONE WRITE LIKE THIS?
