For those of you in Europe and don't have "at will" employment, this is a 'feature' of some US state employment laws. If the boss doesn't like you, they can fire you for no reason at all.
It also means you can grand-flounce without breaking labor laws (though employment contracts are another thing; any severance may be tied to two-weeks-notice).
